Diedrek Scrappy Square
So named for the Kente print yardage that I bought while exploring Leimart Park with Diedrek after a studio visit in 2018.
Is it an authentic African-printed cloth or Chinese?
(As discussed in Aiwan Obinyan’s documentary film Wax Print. )?
I can't tell.
As with many printed stripe fabrics, I discovered the stripes were off-grain. Oh well.
After dithering around with options, I decided to keep it simple and use the one print with solids inspired by Cross Colours and the Pan African Flag.
Textiles used:
"Kente" print cotton percale. Yardage bought at a shop in Leimart Park, 2/2018
Black cotton jersey. From Painting's Edge workshop in Idyllwild CA. Never fit.
Kelly green cotton jersey from an iHappy tee
Red cotton/spandex jersey. Was one of several red sleep dress samples I pulled from the free samples box at work.
Yellow cotton jersey. From a Callate La Boca tee that Severo got on his Smithereens Spanish tour. Had a VW van graphic. Never fit.
